Historic Tainan Walks

Tainan was among Taiwan's earliest cities to develop and still preserves a wealth of historic buildings and temples, with many old houses reborn as distinctive shops and cafes. In the early morning, visitors can try freshly sliced beef soup for breakfast; by evening, lanterns light up the historic districts as bars housed in restored old buildings begin to open. Most attractions are within walking distance, making it easy to experience the city's different faces by day and by night.
Travel Tips
  • Downtown night market schedules: Garden Night Market (Thu–Sun), Wusheng Night Market (Wed, Fri, Sat), and the adjacent Dadong Night Market and Dadong East Night Market (Mon, Tue, Fri), so you can plan your itinerary flexibly.
  • Yongda Road in Yongkang District is lined with beef soup shops. Most open early in the morning and close around noon, making them a go-to breakfast choice for locals.
  • Local eateries are concentrated around Guohua Street and Bao'an Road, where shrimp rice, bowl rice cake, and eel noodles are the signature dishes; Anping, meanwhile, is known for shrimp rolls, oyster fritters (o-de), and candied fruit.
  • Once Tainan's international trading gateway, Anping preserves historic Dutch fortress masonry at Anping Old Fort; toward evening, head to Yuguang Island to savor the coastal sunset.
  • Hayashi Department Store and the National Museum of Taiwan Literature were both built during the Japanese colonial period in the Western styles introduced at the time; today they serve as a department store selling local design goods and a literary exhibition space, respectively.
  • Tainan is home to numerous centuries-old temples, each dedicated to deities presiding over specific blessings: Holy Ruler Guan (Guan Sheng Di Jun) oversees wealth, Wenchang Emperor governs academic exams and career advancement, and Yue Lao (the Old Man Under the Moon) presides over love and marriage.
  • Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 98 Fucheng Taijiang Route departs from Tainan Railway Station and stops at the Tainan Confucius Temple, Chikan Tower, Hayashi Department Store, the Anping area, and more, making it convenient to travel between districts.
Things to Do
  • A Day of Historic Sites and Old Streets
The West Central District preserves an abundance of historic buildings and streets. The Chinese-style pavilions of Chikan Tower stand on the wall foundations of a Dutch-built fort, while the Tainan Confucius Temple was established in 1665 as a government-run school. Nearby, both the Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple and the Grand Mazu Temple enshrine Yue Lao, known respectively for warding off unwanted suitors and stabilizing relationships. In the evening, head to Shennong Street to visit bars in old houses and experience Tainan's nightlife. The city government offers free English walking tours: the Classic Tour visits historic buildings such as the Tainan Confucius Temple and Hayashi Department Store, while the Local Life Tour ventures into the alleyways. Both tours require advance booking.
  • A Century of Memories in Urban Greenery
The East District preserves several early 20th-century Western-style buildings that once housed officials and missionaries. Covering 9 hectares, Barclay Memorial Park features lakes, walking trails, and expansive lawns, making it a favorite spot for local walks and picnics. In the afternoon, visit Tainan Theological College and Seminary; completed in 1903, its campus buildings feature gray exterior walls and pointed-arch wooden windows, and their exteriors are open for viewing on weekends and holidays. A short distance away, the Former Tainan Magistrate Residence now houses a lifestyle shop and dining space where you can enjoy afternoon tea in a century-old building. In the evening, head to the adjacent Dadong Night Market and Dadong East Night Market to taste authentic Tainan snacks.
  • Seeking the Red Thread of Fate at Historic Temples
In the Qing dynasty, Zhen Bei Fang Cultural Park in the North District was an administrative and military center, and its neighborhoods still preserve numerous temples. Within the park, Da Guanyin Temple is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guanyin, while the adjoining Xingji Temple venerates Baosheng Dadi, the deity of medicine—a Buddhist and a Taoist temple standing side by side. Da Guanyin Temple also enshrines Yue Lao (the matchmaker deity). Legend holds that destined lovers are bound by an invisible red thread; after describing your ideal partner to Yue Lao and receiving divine consent through divination blocks (bwa bwei), you may take a red thread to carry with you. When night falls, head to Garden Night Market to explore local flavors.
  • Brick Walls, Ancient Banyan Trees, and Coastal Sunsets
In the 17th century, Anping District was Tainan's gateway to the outside world. The wall remains of Anping Old Fort date back to a Dutch trading and military stronghold; climb the observation tower for sweeping harbor views. At nearby Anping Tree House, the walls and trees have grown into one; look up and you will see no roof, only layers of tree canopy, with a wooden walkway passing through. The old street is lined with shops that have been in business for decades, selling freshly fried oyster fritters and candied fruit by weight. Toward sunset, head to Yuguang Island and sit on the beach to enjoy the sunset.
  • The Flavors of Beef Soup and Peanut Brittle
The Yongda Road area in Yongkang District is home to many beef soup shops. Most open in the early hours of the morning, serving fresh, never-frozen beef delivered directly from a nearby meat market. Thinly sliced raw beef is scalded with piping-hot broth and served with shredded ginger and soy sauce, delivering fresh, delicious flavor in every spoonful. Another local specialty is peanut brittle, made by cooking peanuts, maltose, and sugar over a stove fire. Besides classic brittle blocks, you can also find peanut rolls, which are pressed flat and folded into rolls. In Taiwanese custom, peanuts symbolize good things to come, making them a perfect gift to take home.
