Beiji Temple (West Central Areas)(北極殿(中西區))

Introduce

Beiji Temple(北極殿) mainly worships Beiji Xuan Tian Shang Di, and lies above Jiuling(鷲嶺), a relatively high point in Tainan. Because of the Northern Black Tortoise, unlike other temples, Beiji Temple uses black as its main color. The temple currently has the oldest horizontal plaque in Tainan, the "Wei Xian He Yi" plaque (威顯赫奕)from 1689, presented by King Ning Jing Wang Zhu Shu-gui. The temple's old bell dates back to the 17th Year of Daoguang Reign of Qing Dynasty (1837), and was commissioned by Tainan businessman Wu Shang-xin (founder of Tainan Wu Garden),who travelled to Suzhou in mainland China to have the bell made and sent to the temple. Beiji Temple is full of old treasures like these. The alley next to the temple was called Geta Alley(柴屐巷) on old maps, and used to contain lots of shops selling the Japanese style wooden "Geta" clogs. Although there is no trace of them any more, you can imagine the once bustling scene of Tainan's main streets.

Suddenly, there was the temple ...

    Traveler rating:3 2018-12

Had been looking for this temple the day before and couldn't find it, and suddenly (as the case can be with these things), suddenly when we were looking for another temple, this one appears! So, we cross the street and go in It isn't particularly noteworthy in any way ... having all the standard features. Like many of the temples in town, it has a well-equipped toilet in the back, which came in handy. The day we went, there were only a couple people worshiping, so I felt comfortable in exploring more than I usually do in these situations. There were a group of women practicing a ritual of some sorts, which we found compelling. If you find yourself walking by this temple (which LP doesn't list), poke your head in.

    Small hidden temple

    Traveler rating:4 2018-12

I passed by this Taoist on the way to the 100 year old rice dumplings shop. The temple is in between the shop houses. The entrance is indented, so you will miss it easily. The temple is rather small and simple, but looks very old and of historical significance Saw many locals praying here.

    Small temple

It is a small Taoist temple between buildings. It is very close to Tiantan. So, you can maybe take a look. The entrance gate with a tablet “Beijidian” is beautiful.
