This year marked the fourth year that Tainan was added by the international gourmet food review magazine Michelin Guide to its coverage. Last year (2024), there were 31 Bib Gourmand restaurants and 28 selected restaurants. The new restaurants added in February were announced yesterday (12th) and a total of 3 great eateries in Tainan were included. These were the “Chuan Chia Congee” in Aping District, “Liang Liang Table” in North District, and “Mayu Cocoon” in Central-West-Central District serving up local milkfish congee, original modern-Taiwanese fusion cuisine, and elegant Japanese izakaya food and drink respectively. The new additions showed that the great taste of Tainan transcends boundaries and is recognized by local and foreign food experts alike. International visitors should visit Tainan to enjoy the charm of the foodie capital.
Mayor Huang Wei-Che said the food and charms of Tainan is now not only praised by local tourists but has scored high marks from the international media and opinion leaders. The UK National Geographic Traveller magazine included Tainan in its “The Cool List 2024”, and the CNN Travel named Tainan as one of its Best Places to Visit in 2024. The UK media Time Out also chose Tainan as one of the Best Places to Travel in Asia in 2025. All praised Tainan for its history, culture, and diversified travel experiences. The Michelin Guide announced its new additions for February. A total of 62 eateries were recommended for travelers including 3 from Tainan.
Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau of Tainan City Government revealed that the three new additions in February included “Chuan Chia Congee” in Anping District whose signature milkfish congee and stewed fish belly are made from high-quality fresh fish and perfectly to bring out the sweetness of the fish for gourmands to enjoy. The eatery’s homemade braised pork rice is an addictive combination of fatty pork, sweet and salty gravy, and full-bodied rice. Locals will also order fried bread stick soup, and let the bread stick soak up all the rich goodness from the soup. “Liang Liang Table” in the North District combines modern cooking techniques with traditional Taiwanese culture. Meals are served as set menus that are adjusted to use fresh, seasonal ingredients. The use of seasonal ingredients, the bold yet polished seasoning, as well as cozy dining atmosphere all provide guests with a sophisticated and welcoming gourmet experience. “Mayu Cocoon” is located in a quiet alley in the Central-West District. Japanese izakaya cuisine is served during dinner as set menus. The ingredients are purchased daily by the head chef at the market, and feature small, elegant dishes with delicate flavors. For the late evening menu, individual dishes can be ordered to enjoy with wine for the perfect late-night feast.
According to the Tourism Bureau, the Lantern Festival is happening this week. In addition to sampling the Lantern Festival staple of glutinous rice ball dessert soup, this year’s Zuozheng Lantern Festival, Yanshui Yuejin Harbor Lantern Festival, and Longci Light Festival - Ritual in the Empty Mountains will draw to a close on February 16. Other events such as the Fucheng Puji Lantern Festival (1/24 ~ 3/1), Fucheng Chenggong Lantern Festival (1/15 ~ 3/2), Hai-an Lantern Festival (1/18 ~ 3/2), Shennong Street Street Lantern Festival (1/18 ~ 3/2), and Xinying Shimmer Festival (2/8 ~ 3/16) are all underway.
