The popular travel & culture show “Bare Feet Mickela Mallozzi” produced by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) visited Tainan for filming on January 12 and 13. Their visit reflected the draw of Tainan’s rich culture and tourism. The show has won four Emmy Awards and the average viewership per episode for each 10-episode is in excess of two million. The show is aired in 50 US states and large parts of Canada. It is also streamed on web TV services such as Amazon Prime and Tubi, as well as in-flight entertainment systems so the marketing power is exceptional. The filming took place at representative locations in Tainan including the Anping Fort, Anping Kaitai Tianhou Temple, and Ten-Drum Cultural Village that showcased the cultural diversity and rich history of the city. During a break in the filming, Mayor Huang Wei-Che visited the film crew and welcomed them to Tainan with a gift of pineapple cakes, pomelo flora coffee, and Yujin dried mango.

Mayor Huang said that Tainan is not only a cultural capital of Taiwan but also an important international tourism destination. The city is filled with history and cultural experiences. The filming for “Bare Feet Mickela Mallozzi” will not just be a cultural exchange but a superb opportunity to introduce the world to Tainan. The host Mickela Mallozzi and his team explored the cultural essence of Tainan with great enthusiasm and creativity. Everything from parade formations to drumming and drum-making experienced served to showcase the unique charm of Tainan. The Mayor hoped that the show will encourage more of its international audience to visit Tainan in order to experience its hospitality and depth.

Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau of Tainan City Government stated that “Bare Feet Mickela Mallozi” documented the history of Anping Old Fort, the religious culture of Kaitai Tianhou Temple, as well as the Ten-Drum Cultural Village’s fusion of the traditional and modern performing arts. The crew took part in making drums by hand, while the host took part in the make-up ceremony for the parade formation and learned the “General” footwork to bring the traditional culture of Tainan to life. The film crew even recorded the local food on Bao-an Road to give the international audience a taste of authentic Tainan flavors. The collaboration will hopefully enhance the international visibility of Tainan and persuade more North American and global travelers to make Tainan their next vacation destination.

The Tourism Bureau of Tainan City Government is continuing to develop the international market. Tainan boasts a wide variety of cultural & creativity and natural scenery, rich specialty agricultural products and extensive tourism resources. The exceptional marketing power and massive audience of the “Bare Feet Mickela Mallozzi” show will provide Tainan with a significant international promotional boost. In the future, City Hall will continue collaborating with the international media to present Tainan on the international stage, create even more tourism business opportunities, and stimulate even greater local economic development.
