The international gourmet magazine “Michelin Guide” announced yesterday (8th) the May additions to its restaurant guide. Three Tainan restaurants made the list, these being the “Bue mi .Lab” in West-Central District, as well as “Yeh-San Thick Duck Soup” and “Jyu Dim” in East District. The elevation of restaurants specializing in experimental flour-based dishes, full-bodied duck soup, and heart-warming Cantonese dim sums to the international stage showed that the great taste of Tainan has been judged and recognized by expert gourmands. Local and overseas travelers are invited to visit Tainan and explore all the surprises that its food has to offer.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che noted that 4 Tainan restaurants made the cut between January and April this year. Three more were then added in the May issue of the “Michelin Guide.” Tainan now has 35 restaurants recommended by Bib Gourmand, and 26 Michelin Selected restaurants for a total of 61 listed. He thanked Tainan’s food industry for their hard work and continued progress. The list of recommended eateries will undoubtedly continue to grow as well. Local and overseas travelers are welcome to visit Tainan and follow in the footsteps of the Michelin Guide to discover the best flavors of Tainan.
Director-General Lin Kuo-hua said that of the three restaurants newly added in May, “Bue mi .Lab” in West-Central District creates novel and experimental flour-based dishes for a menu that is changed seasonally. The use of condiments from across the world imbues each serving with tremendous depth and flavor. “Yeh-San Thick Duck Soup” from East District opened in Tainan in 2021. Its signature thick duck soup is stir-fried in small pots to enhance its mix of fried, garlic and duck fragrance. Shredded bamboo sprouts provide a delicious accompaniment. The Michelin inspector even recommended adding Wu Yin vinegar and a dash of chili powder to really bring out the flavor. “Jyu Dim” was founded by a migrant from Hong Kong who settled in Tainan and all of the dim sums are hand-made. The inspector was particularly impressed by the Hong Kong Style Steamed Chicken Roll for its simple appearance and complex layers of flavor. The rice noodle roll, steamed BBQ pork bun and steamed sponge cake will not disappoint either. The total number of Tainan eateries included in the Michelin Guide has grown steadily and there are now a total of 61 on the list. The presidential inauguration banquet was also held in Tainan for the first time, which coincided with the Tainan 400 this year. Traditional Tainan dishes such as shrimp fried rice, Guanmiao pineapple, specially-made gelato by Ninao, and bubble tea by TEA & Magic Hand welcome foreign guests from afar with authentic local cuisine.
According to the Tourism Bureau, May is the season for Thanksgiving, and a variety of exciting events will be rolled out in Tainan. These include the 2024 Nanxi Meiling Firefly Viewing Season (4/27 ~ 5/12), Follow Sababoy on a Religious Pilgrimage - Collect Digital Stamps and Win! (4/28 ~ 6/30), the 2024 Baihe Lotus Season (May ~ July), and From Raphael to van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London (5/2 ~ 9/1). Tainan invites everyone to bring their mother to Tainan to take part in the exciting activities, see the sights, and enjoy all the great food.
