International Visitors Encouraged to Take Advantage of New Tainan Foreign Language Tour Guide Database!

Introduce

The theme for the Tainan 400 celebrations in 2024 is “Tainan, Where You Belong.” To draw more international tourists to the city, Tainan City Government has adopted a proactive international marketing strategy that includes ongoing efforts to train multi-lingual tour guides and development of a friendly travel environment for international visitors. Trained tour guides proficient in foreign languages are available to lead them through city streets and alleys to discover the beauty of the historic cultural capital. In addition to offering booking to various walking tours, a register of foreign language tour guides has also been compiled by Tainan. Groups or travel agencies can use the register to find suitable tour guides for custom itineraries.

Tainan Mayor Wei-che Huang stated that in addition to focusing on target international markets and cultivation of the Southeast Asia market, City Hall is also cooperating with the Central Government’s New Southward Policy by continuing to develop a friendly, multi-lingual environment for international tourism. The Tourism Bureau of the Tainan City Government, for example, partnered with the Vietnam New Residents Caring Association (CTVA) to co-organize the “New Southward Tour Guide Workshop.” The training program covered an introduction to the cultural features of Tainan, itinerary design and planning, tour guide competence and knowledge, digital image production and marketing, as well as a practical component. The workshop was attended by overseas students, new
immigrants and their offspring from countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. The workshop hoped that trainees would apply their newfound knowledge to future guided tours with international visitors.

Director-General Lin Kuo-hua of the Tourism Bureau said that in addition to promoting the New Southward Policy to attract tourists from Southeast Asia to Tainan, the Bureau is also training English-speaking tour guides and developing more English-language walking tours filled with the local surprises of Tainan. The two English-speaking walking tours (Classic Tour, Local Life) have now been joined by a third route (Sea Discovery Tour) that links together historic buildings, the local market, and coastal sights. These tours are mainly pitched at visitors from overseas. They will convey the beauty of Tainan to international travelers and serve as a bridge for multicultural interactions between Tainan and the world.

According to the Tourism Bureau, the city will host the Tainan 400 and Taiwan Lantern Festival events next year. The training of professional foreign language tour guides will allow more international visitors to appreciate the finer points of Tainan. International travelers, businesses or city agencies with a requirement for foreign language speakers can also visit “the Administrative Services of Tourism Bureau, Tainan City Government - Volunteers Section - Volunteer Announcements” web page to get into contact with suitable tour guides.
