Introduce

The first impression upon entering Togo Village (土溝) is the green rice paddies as far as the eye can see. After passing through very small green tunnel, the water buffalo sculpture at the side of the road tells you that you have arrived in the charming little village of Togo. In 2001, a group of students from Tainan National University of the Arts (臺南藝術大學) came to Togo after their professor started a community project. They later fell in love with this place, settled, married and worked. Over a decade later, they had really become part of the community. The concept behind "Togo Art Museum" (土溝農村美術館) is simple but has deep implications: "The village is the art gallery, The art gallery is the village". Lots of tourists come to Togo searching for the location of the art gallery, only to understand after explanation by a local resident that the entire village is actually an art gallery. A piece of farmland is art, an agricultural product is also art, local farmers are artists, and the local residents working hard together on this piece of land are also artists. After many years of decorating, tourists are greeted with a display of colorful installation art, modern yet not out of place in the rural setting. A charming farmers’ arts farm has recently been added, and has become a permanent art display area, attracting domestic and international tourists to come and explore the biggest art gallery in rural Tainan.

    Art in Action

    Traveler rating:5 2016-12

We took the local train from Tainan to Hobi, which was straightforward. Then, a helpful taxi-driver pointed out where we could rent bicycles, as we exited to the left near the intersection. We gave the lady 1,000 NTD and cycled towards Tugo, a lovely flat and fairly quiet area. The art museum is next to the temple, and we were given free rein but were told that we needed to be out in an hour as some group had hired the place. The group, as it turned out, included one of the artists Guo Ren Wang, and people with camera. He asked if he could do some art-in-action splash-painting on our jeans. We agreed (of course, who wouldn't want some art on their jeans?!) and it turned out that the other people were a TV crew from Taipei. We helped gather leaves for lunch and then sat down to eat the local Tainan delicacy of milk-fish as well as self-sufficiently produced rice and pickled vegetables. It was an unexpected twist to our Taiwan adventure. The museum itself is mesmerizing, two of the artists have been living there and designing indoor and outdoor art for over ten years. It was lovely to simply sit down, look at the different pieces while butterflies flitted by, the birds sang and the bees hummed. A magical place.

TOGO, the special village you must to go

    Traveler rating:5 2015-03

This is my second time to visited TOGO, it's a beautiful village with art works, I love art works of straw named "Ben-wan", he is so cute and huge, and I want to more close to him to take a picture, so I bought pass ticket for indoor arts. I though it's really cheap tour ticket, only$150 per people,21 pieces of artists and creative team art works. There are 17 exhibition field, and 10 of arts in indoor, another 7arts public in outdoor. Use pass card when you visit indoor art works. I spend all day in TOGO, no rush and enjoy every moment with my boyfriend.

    失望的景點

    Traveler rating:2 2017-03

    社區內的裝置藝術,現在統一放置在ㄧ個地點,買門票後可以進入參觀拍照。這樣的設計讓人覺得和農村的連結性變弱了。社區內車子不少,帶小朋友參觀時要注意安全。

    農村美術館

    Traveler rating:4 2016-02
