Chimei Museum(奇美博物館)

Traveler rating:4.5 1360 Reviews

Monday:09:30 – 17:30

The entrance of the square has a grand Fountain of Apollo (阿波羅噴泉), and a bridge crosses the moat with a row of fierce white lion heads along the side and solemn Olympus (奧林帕斯) statues on top. The front entrance of the museum features a tall dome shape and Greek columns, a grand design befitting a palace of cultural treasures. Perched at the building’s highest point is the Angel of Glory (榮耀天使) statue, a reproduction of the work of French sculptor Louis-Ernst Barrias. Holding a laurel and bugle, her beautiful figure stands forever atop Chimei Museum (奇美博物館) to symbolize protection of this country, and glorify the beautiful people and things in this world. The main building is 150 meters wide at the front and 42 meters tall, and it cost NTD 1.3 billion to build, a big gift given to Tainan City by Hsu Wen-long, founder of the Chimei Group. After opening in 2015, it became a top destination for both Taiwanese and foreign visitors. The museum occupies 9.5 hectares, and it contains countless precious international works of art, collected in order to realize Hsu Wen-long’s big dream of a “local museum, making music and art available to everyone, from 3-year-old infants to 90 year old grandparents, a boundless palace of aesthetic culture”. Tourists in Tainan absolutely must experience this European style palace full of cultural treasures.

If you are walking from the Baoan station (exit to the road, turn right and cross the bridge and as soon as you go have cleared the overpass, the large car park is on the left. No signs but you are going the right way - walk diagonally across and you'll find an entrance to the back of the museum. I went there expecting more on Roden than his influences. While I am not a great lover of fossils, the natural history section is well done. And the Arms and armaments was better than I anticipated - covering so many ethic groups and without endless repition of the same types of arms. But what I was really taken with was the Musical Instruments: Walk in Orchestra, where each element of an orchestra is explained and on most hours, a symphony is played. The sound is brilliant and you can walk around and pick up the different elements.

It is amazing what pieces of art are exhibited here. European artists and sculptures of old masters. The wonderful souvenirs. The park is wonderful. it was a very hot day so make sure you wear a hat or have an umbrella with you and of course some water or you buy it on the way in the little shop in the park.

A private museum- with impressive collection of a) weapons b) musical instruments- especially violins c) paintings. among others The museum building is an europian style one- very few found in Taiwan. The building sits on a lavish garden estate with a water body flowing through it, a very beautiful place to spend with friends & family. The entry fee is 200 NTD. The museum is spread over two floors of five to six gallery halls each. One can browse through the entire collection in about 2.5 - 3 hours. the nearest railway station is Bao an station- 900mtres from there. I took a taxi from the station for 90NTD on the meter.

Well what a surprise this place was. An amazing collection of things. We spent 3 hours but you could seriously spend a day here if you are into reading about things and doing the audio tours, and don't have children. Beautiful European style building in the middle of Taiwan. A few hours in the A/C was a nice!! The amount of stuffed animals is a taxidermists dream, apparently the worlds largest violin collection and a huge collection of Rodin art and sculptures. Definitely worth a visit.

This museum is very extensive with the concept of classical European palace buildings Rome and Greece. In the outside like being in the White House of Washington DC. So many instagramable photo spots in every corners of the building both outside and inside. Starting from the museum entrance area, with the Apollo Fountain Plaza which is a replica of the Palace of Versailles in France, the bridge to the museum is lined with statues of Greek Gods. The entrance ticket to the museum is NT 200 and we can see more than 10,000 collections of artifacts and western art, such as paintings, carvings, furniture, musical instruments, weapons, animal fossils, and the oldest violin. I did not enter the museum.Just be in the building area while relaxing in a coffee shop and see souvenirs in the gift shop.Chimei Museum can be reached by train to Bao'an Station then 10 minutes walk.
