Introduce

Located next to Tait & Co. Merchant House, the former residence of Chu Jiu Ying(朱玖瑩故居) was originally a dormitory for staff of the Taiwan Salt Co., Ministry of Finance, and is also called the Salthouse. It was so named because the building was once assigned to Mr. Chu Jiu Ying, director of the Salt Bureau, Ministry of Finance, who settled here because of the salt industry. As a master of calligraphy, Mr. Chu kept much of his work, and the building houses his contemporary calligraphy collection. He lived in Anping for many years, and called himself “the old man of Anping.” Currently, there are plans to turn the residence into a calligraphy exhibition hall, the most attractive piece being the Yan style Heart Sutra(顏體心經) which takes up an entire wall. The Heart Sutra wall is most enchanting in the afternoon, when light from the window shines on the wall. The tangle of light and dark, black and white, seems to settle the mind as one gazes at it.

    Calligraphy museum

This museum stands beside Anping Tree House and the ticket for Tree House entitles the admission to this museum. It is not very big inside. But some calligraphy works of Mr. Zhu Jiuying are beautifully displayed.

Caligraphy examples with a chance to try it

I think this would be great for parents who want to give their children a chance to try out traditional caligraphy.

Good if you are in to Chinese calligraphy

    Traveler rating:4 2018-05

The collections are from local competitions and not much from the deceased master himself. So kinda of disappointing in that sense. The local works are still worth a visit.

It would have been very interesting if you understand Chinese. But if you don't, its not worth going. The upstairs part of the museum was interesting with Taiwan history, but it was mostly in Chinese.

Not very easy to appreciate if you don't read Chinese

    Traveler rating:3 2015-10

We visited this attraction as it was on the same ticket ans the Anping treehouse, however not being able to read or write Chinese it was difficult to understand and appreciate this attraction.
